I am stunned that no one has thought of this before--at least that I'm aware of. Certainly if the Eagles can fly Gandalf all over ME, they could have done this. If Frodo didn't want to drop the ring, then just drop Frodo--sorry, but one little Hobbit don't amount to a hill of beans next to all of ME. And what does Gandalf need Shadowfax for? I'm sure eagles are faster and more efficient. Maybe Tolkein should have left out the Eagles? But then how would Gandalf have escaped from Orthanc?
